1 J oas aveva sette anni quando iniziò a regnare, e regnò quarant'anni a Gerusalemme. Sua madre si chiamava Tsibiah di Beer-Sceba.

A son of seven years Joash in his reigning, and forty years he hath reigned in Jerusalem, and the name of his mother Zibiah of Beer-Sheba.

2 J oas fece ciò che è giusto agli occhi dell'Eterno durante tutto il tempo che visse il sacerdote Jehoiada.

And Joash doth that which is right in the eyes of Jehovah all the days of Jehoiada the priest.

3 J ehoiada prese per lui due mogli, ed egli generò figli e figlie.

And Jehoiada taketh for him two wives, and he begetteth sons and daughters.

4 D opo questo venne in cuore a Joas di restaurare la casa dell'Eterno.

And it cometh to pass after this, it hath been with the heart of Joash to renew the house of Jehovah,

5 P erciò radunò i sacerdoti e i Leviti, e disse loro: «Andate per le città di Giuda e raccogliete anno per anno da tutto Israele denaro per restaurare la casa del vostro DIO; cercate di fare la cosa in fretta». Ma i Leviti non mostrarono alcuna fretta.

and he gathereth the priests and the Levites, and saith to them, `Go out to the cities of Judah, and gather from all Israel money to strengthen the house of your God sufficiently year by year, and ye, ye do haste to the matter;' and the Levites have not hasted.

6 A llora il re chiamò il sommo sacerdote Jehoiada e gli disse: «Perché non hai richiesto dai Leviti che portassero da Giuda e da Gerusalemme la tassa fissata da Mosè, servo dell'Eterno, e dall'assemblea d'Israele per la tenda della testimonianza?».

And the king calleth for Jehoiada the head, and saith to him, `Wherefore hast thou not required of the Levites to bring in out of Judah and out of Jerusalem the tribute of Moses, servant of Jehovah, and of the assembly of Israel, for the tent of the testimony?

7 I nfatti i figli di Athaliah, quella donna malvagia, avevano saccheggiato la casa di DIO e avevano persino usato tutte le cose consacrate della casa dell'Eterno per i Baal.

for sons of Athaliah, the wicked one, have broken up the house of God, and also, all the holy things of the house of Jehovah they have prepared for Baalim.'

8 P er ordine del re fecero una cassa e la misero fuori, alla porta della casa dell'Eterno.

And the king speaketh, and they make one chest, and put it at the gate of the house of Jehovah without,

9 P oi fecero un proclama in Giuda e in Gerusalemme perché si portasse all'Eterno la tassa che Mosè servo di DIO, aveva imposto a Israele nel deserto.

and give an intimation in Judah and in Jerusalem to bring in to Jehovah the tribute of Moses, servant of God, on Israel in the wilderness.

10 T utti i capi e tutto il popolo si rallegrarono e portarono il denaro, gettandolo nella cassa fino a riempirla.

And all the heads, and all the people rejoice, and they bring in, and cast into the chest, unto completion.

11 Q uando la cassa veniva dai Leviti portata all'ispettore del re, perché vedevano che c'era molto denaro, il segretario del re e l'incaricato del sommo sacerdote venivano a vuotare la cassa; quindi la prendevano e la riportavano al suo posto. Facevano cosí ogni giorno; così raccolsero una grande quantità di denaro.

And it cometh to pass, at the time one bringeth in the chest for the inspection of the king by the hand of the Levites, and at their seeing that the money abundant, that a scribe of the king hath come in, and an officer of the head-priest, and they empty the chest, and take it up and turn it back unto its place; thus they have done day by day, and gather money in abundance.

12 P oi il re e Jehoiada lo davano a quelli che facevano il lavoro di servizio della casa dell'Eterno, ed essi pagavano gli scalpellini e i falegnami per restaurare la casa dell'Eterno, e anche i lavoratori del ferro e del bronzo per riparare la casa dell'Eterno.

And the king and Jehoiada give it unto the doers of the work of the service of the house of Jehovah, and they are hiring hewers and artificers to renew the house of Jehovah, and also -- to artificers in iron and brass to strengthen the house of Jehovah.

13 C osí i lavoratori eseguirono accuratamente i lavori, e per mezzo di loro le riparazioni progredirono, essi riportarono la casa di DIO alle sue condizioni originali e la consolidarono.

And those doing the business work, and there goeth up lengthening to the work by their hand, and they establish the house of God, by its proper measure, and strengthen it.

14 Q uando ebbero finito, portarono davanti al re e davanti a Jehoiada il denaro rimasto, e con esso fecero utensili per la casa dell'Eterno: utensili per il servizio e per gli olocausti, coppe e altri utensili d'oro e d'argento. Finché visse Jehoiada, si offrirono continuamente olocausti nella casa dell'Eterno.

And at their completing, they have brought in before the king and Jehoiada the rest of the money, and they make it vessels for the house of Jehovah, vessels of serving, and of offering up, and spoons, even vessels of gold and silver; and they are causing burnt-offerings to ascend in the house of Jehovah continually, all the days of Jehoiada.

15 M a Jehoiada, divenuto vecchio e sazio di giorni, morí; aveva centotrent'anni quando morí

And Jehoiada is aged and satisfied with days, and dieth -- a son of a hundred and thirty years in his death,

16 e fu sepolto nella città di Davide insieme ai re, perché aveva fatto del bene in Israele, nei confronti di DIO e della sua casa.

and they bury him in the city of David, with the kings, for he hath done good in Israel, and with God, and his house.

17 D opo la morte di Jehoiada, i capi di Giuda andarono a prostrarsi davanti al re; e il re diede loro ascolto.

And after the death of Jehoiada come in have heads of Judah, and bow themselves to the king; then hath the king hearkened unto them,

18 E ssi abbandonarono quindi la casa dell'Eterno, il DIO dei loro padri, e servirono gli Ascerim e gli idoli; a motivo di questo loro peccato, l'ira di Dio cadde su Giuda e su Gerusalemme.

and they forsake the house of Jehovah, God of their fathers, and serve the shrines and the idols, and there is wrath upon Judah and Jerusalem for this their guilt.

19 L 'Eterno mandò loro profeti per farli ritornare a lui, questi testimoniarono contro di loro, ma essi non vollero ascoltare.

And He sendeth among them prophets, to bring them back unto Jehovah, and they testify against them, and they have not given ear;

20 A llora lo Spirito di DIO investí Zaccaria, figlio del sacerdote Jehoiada, che si levò al di sopra del popolo e disse loro: «Cosí dice DIO: Perché trasgredite i comandamenti dell'Eterno e non prosperate? Poiché avete abbandonato l'Eterno, anch'egli vi abbandonerà»

and the Spirit of God hath clothed Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest, and he standeth over-against the people, and saith to them, `Thus said God, Why are ye transgressing the commands of Jehovah, and prosper not? because ye have forsaken Jehovah -- He doth forsake you.'

21 M a quelli fecero una congiura contro di lui e per ordine del re lo lapidarono nel cortile della casa dell'Eterno.

And they conspire against him, and stone him with stones by the command of the king, in the court of the house of Jehovah,

22 C osí il re Joas non si ricordò della bontà che Jehoiada, padre di Zaccaria, aveva usato verso di lui e ne uccise il figlio, che morendo disse: «L'Eterno veda e ne chieda conto!».

and Joash the king hath not remembered the kindness that Jehoiada his father did with him, and slayeth his son, and in his death he said, `Jehovah doth see, and require.'

23 C osí avvenne che, all'inizio del nuovo anno, l'esercito dei Siri salí contro Joas. Essi vennero in Giuda e a Gerusalemme, e sterminarono fra il popolo tutti i suoi capi, e ne inviarono l'intero bottino al re di Damasco.

And it cometh to pass, at the turn of the year, come up hath the force of Aram against him, and they come in unto Judah and Jerusalem, and destroy all the heads of the people from the people, and all their spoil they have sent to the king of Damascus,

24 S ebbene l'esercito dei Siri fosse venuto con pochi uomini, l'Eterno diede nelle loro mani un grandissimo esercito, perché avevano abbandonato l'Eterno, il DIO dei loro padri. Cosí essi fecero giustizia di Joas.

for with few men have the force of Aram come in, and Jehovah hath given into their hand a mighty force for multitude, because they have forsaken Jehovah, God of their fathers; and with Joash they have executed judgments.

25 Q uando i Siri si ritirarono da lui (perché lo avevano lasciato molto malato), i suoi servi ordirono una congiura contro di lui, a motivo dell'uccisione dei figli del sacerdote Jehoiada, e lo uccisero nel suo letto. Cosí egli morí, e lo seppellirono nella città di Davide, ma non nei sepolcri dei re.

And in their going from him -- for they left him with many diseases -- his servants themselves have conspired against him, for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and slay him on his bed, and he dieth; and they bury him in the city of David, and have not buried him in the graves of the kings.

26 Q uesti sono coloro che congiurarono contro di lui: Zabad figlio di Scimeath l'Ammonita, e Jehozabad figlio di Scimrith, la Moabita.

And these those conspiring against him, Zabad son of Shimeath the Ammonitess, and Jehozabad son of Shimrith the Moabitess.

27 Q uanto riguarda i suoi figli, le molte profezie dette contro di lui e il restauro della casa di DIO, ecco, queste cose sono scritte negli annali del libro dei re. Al suo posto regnò suo figlio Amatsiah.

As to his sons, and the greatness of the burden upon him, and the foundation of the house of God, lo, they are written on the `Inquiry' of the book of the Kings; and reign doth Amaziah his son in his stead.
