1 S ucedió que después de la muerte de Saúl, habiendo regresado David de la derrota de los amalecitas, David permaneció dos días en Siclag.

Now after the death of Saul, David returned from killing the Amalekites and stayed two days in Ziklag.

2 Y al tercer día, he aquí, un hombre llegó del campamento de Saúl con sus ropas rasgadas y polvo sobre su cabeza, y al llegar ante David, cayó en tierra y se postró.

On the third day, a man came from the tents of Saul. His clothes were torn and he had dust on his head. When he came to David, he fell with his face to the ground.

3 Y David le dijo: ¿De dónde vienes? Y él le respondió: Me he escapado del campamento de Israel.

David said to him, “Where do you come from?” And he answered, “I have run away from the tents of Israel.”

4 D avid le preguntó: ¿Qué aconteció ? Te ruego que me lo digas. Y él respondió: El pueblo ha huido de la batalla, y también muchos del pueblo han caído y han muerto; también Saúl y su hijo Jonatán han muerto.

David said to him, “How did it go? Tell me.” And the man said, “The people have run from the battle. Many have fallen and are dead. Saul and his son Jonathan are dead also.”

5 D ijo David al joven que se lo había contado: ¿Cómo sabes que Saúl y su hijo Jonatán han muerto?

David said to the young man, “How do you know that Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?”

6 E l joven que se lo había contado, dijo: Yo estaba por casualidad en el monte Gilboa, y he aquí, Saúl estaba apoyado sobre su lanza. Y he aquí que los carros y los jinetes lo perseguían de cerca.

The young man said, “I happened to be on Mount Gilboa. There I saw Saul holding himself up with his spear. The war-wagons and the horsemen were coming close after him.

7 A l mirar él hacia atrás, me vio y me llamó. Y dije: “Heme aquí.”

When he looked behind him, he saw me. He called to me and I said, ‘Here I am.’

8 Y él me dijo: “¿Quién eres?” Y le respondí: “Soy amalecita.”

He said to me, ‘Who are you?’ And I answered, ‘I am an Amalekite.’

9 E ntonces él me dijo: “Te ruego que te pongas junto a mí y me mates, pues la agonía se ha apoderado de mí, porque todavía estoy con vida.”

Then he said to me, ‘I beg you, stand beside me and kill me. I am in pain, and yet I am still alive.’

10 M e puse, pues, junto a él y lo maté, porque yo sabía que él no podía vivir después de haber caído. Tomé la corona que estaba en su cabeza y la pulsera que estaba en su brazo, y los he traído aquí a mi señor.

So I stood beside him and killed him, because I knew he could not live after he had fallen. Then I took the crown which was on his head and the beautiful gold band which he wore on his arm, and I have brought them here to my lord.”

11 E ntonces David agarró sus ropas y las rasgó, y así hicieron también todos los hombres que estaban con él.

Then David took hold of his clothes and tore them, and so did all the men who were with him.

12 Y se lamentaron y lloraron y ayunaron hasta el atardecer por Saúl y por su hijo Jonatán, por el pueblo del Señor y por la casa de Israel, porque habían caído a espada.

They cried in sorrow and did not eat until evening, because of Saul and his son Jonathan, and of the people of the Lord and of the family of Israel. For they had fallen by the sword.

13 D ijo David al joven que se lo había contado: ¿De dónde eres? Y él respondió: Soy hijo de un extranjero, un amalecita.

David said to the young man, “Where are you from?” And he answered, “I am the son of one from another land, an Amalekite.”

14 Y David le dijo: ¿Cómo es que no tuviste temor de extender tu mano para destruir al ungido del Señor ?

Then David said to him, “Why were you not afraid to put out your hand to destroy the Lord’s chosen one?”

15 L lamando David a uno de los jóvenes, le dijo: Ve, mátalo. Y él lo hirió, y murió.

Then David called one of the young men and said, “Go, cut him down.” So he hit him and he died.

16 Y David le dijo: Tu sangre sea sobre tu cabeza, porque tu boca ha testificado contra ti, al decir: “Yo he matado al ungido del Señor.” Elegía de David por Saúl y Jonatán

David said to him, “Your blood is on your head. Because your mouth has spoken against you, saying, ‘I have killed the Lord’s chosen one.’” David’s Song of Sorrow for Saul and Jonathan

17 D avid entonó esta elegía por Saúl y por su hijo Jonatán,

Then David sang a song of sorrow for Saul and his son Jonathan.

18 y ordenó que enseñaran a los hijos de Judá el cántico del arco; he aquí, está escrito en el libro de Jaser.

He told them to teach the song of the bow to the people of Judah. See, it is written in the book of Jashar.

19 T u hermosura, oh Israel, ha perecido sobre tus montes. ¡Cómo han caído los valientes!

“O Israel, your beauty is destroyed on your high places! How have the powerful fallen!

20 N o lo anunciéis en Gat, no lo proclaméis en las calles de Ascalón; para que no se regocijen las hijas de los filisteos, para que no se alegren las hijas de los incircuncisos.

Do not tell about it in Gath. Do not tell about it in the streets of Ashkelon, or the daughters of the Philistines might be filled with joy. The daughters of those who have not gone through our religious act might be filled with joy.

21 O h montes de Gilboa, no haya sobre vosotros rocío ni lluvia, ni campos de ofrendas; porque allí fue deshonrado el escudo de los valientes, el escudo de Saúl, no ungido con aceite.

O mountains of Gilboa, do not let the water that is on the grass in the early morning or rain be on you. Let not grass be grown on your fields. For there the covering of the powerful was made dirty, the covering of Saul, as if he had not been set apart with oil.

22 D e la sangre de los muertos, de la grosura de los poderosos, el arco de Jonatán no volvía atrás, y la espada de Saúl no volvía vacía.

The bow of Jonathan did not turn away. The sword of Saul did not return empty. They did not turn from the blood of the dead and the fat of the powerful.

23 S aúl y Jonatán, amados y amables en su vida, y en su muerte no fueron separados; más ligeros eran que águilas, más fuertes que leones.

Saul and Jonathan were loved and pleasing in their life. And they were not divided in their death. They were faster than eagles. They were stronger than lions.

24 H ijas de Israel, llorad por Saúl, que os vestía lujosamente de escarlata, que ponía adornos de oro en vuestros vestidos.

O daughters of Israel, cry for Saul. He dressed you in fine red clothing. He put on your clothing objects of gold.

25 ¡ Cómo han caído los valientes en medio de la batalla! Jonatán, muerto en tus alturas.

How have the powerful fallen in the center of the battle! Jonathan has been killed on your high places.

26 E stoy afligido por ti, Jonatán, hermano mío; tú me has sido muy estimado. Tu amor fue para mí más maravilloso que el amor de las mujeres.

I am troubled because of you, my brother Jonathan. You have been very pleasing to me. Your love to me was greater than the love of women.

27 ¡ Cómo han caído los valientes, y perecido las armas de guerra!

How have the powerful fallen, and the bows and swords of war destroyed!”
