N abucodonosor se llevó cautivos a Babilonia a los ancianos, sacerdotes y profetas que estaban en Jerusalén, lo mismo que a todo el pueblo. Desde Jerusalén el profeta Jeremías envió una carta a los que sobrevivieron al exilio. Éste es el texto de la carta,

Now these are the words of the letter which Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem to the rest of the elders of the exile, the priests, the prophets and all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had taken into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon.
