K aua e titiro mai ki ahau, no te mea he parauri ahau, no te mea kua tahuna ahau e te ra. I riri nga tama a toku whaea ki ahau, meinga ana ahau e ratou hei kaitiaki mo nga mara waina; ko taku mara ia, ko taku ake, kihai i tiakina e ahau.

Look not upon me, because I am swarthy, Because the sun hath scorched me. My mother's sons were incensed against me; They made me keeper of the vineyards; But mine own vineyard have I not kept.
