1 R oboam fue a Siquem, porque en Siquem se había reunido todo Israel para hacerlo rey.

¶ And Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had come together in Shechem to make him king.

2 C uando lo supo Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, el cual estaba en Egipto, adonde había huido a causa del rey Salomón, volvió de Egipto,

And when Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, heard it, who was in Egypt, where he had fled from the presence of Solomon, the king, Jeroboam returned out of Egypt.

3 p ues habían enviado a llamarle. Vino, pues, Jeroboam con todo Israel, y hablaron a Roboam diciendo:

And they sent and called him. So Jeroboam and all Israel came and spoke to Rehoboam, saying,

4 — Tu padre agravó nuestro yugo; alivia ahora algo de la dura servidumbre y del pesado yugo con que tu padre nos apremió, y te serviremos.

Thy father made our yoke grievous; now, therefore, ease thou somewhat the grievous servitude of thy father and his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we will serve thee.

5 É l les dijo: —Volved a mí de aquí a tres días. Y el pueblo se fue.

And he said unto them, Come again unto me after three days. And the people departed.

6 E ntonces el rey Roboam consultó con los ancianos que habían estado delante de Salomón, su padre, cuando éste vivía, y les dijo: —¿Qué me aconsejáis vosotros que responda a este pueblo?

Then King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men that had stood before Solomon, his father, while he yet lived, saying, What do you counsel to reply to this people?

7 E llos le contestaron diciendo: —Si te conduces humanamente con este pueblo, lo tratas bien y le hablas con buenas palabras, ellos te servirán siempre.

And they spoke unto him, saying, If thou wilt seek the good of this people and please them and speak good words to them, they will be thy slaves for ever.

8 P ero él abandonó el consejo que le dieron los ancianos, y pidió consejo a los jóvenes que se habían criado con él y estaban a su servicio.

But he forsook the counsel which the old men gave him and took counsel with the young men that were brought up with him, that stood before him.

9 Y les preguntó: —¿Qué aconsejáis vosotros que respondamos a este pueblo, que me ha hablado diciendo: “Alivia algo del yugo que tu padre puso sobre nosotros”?

And he said unto them, What do you counsel us to reply to this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Ease somewhat the yoke that thy father did put upon us?

10 E ntonces los jóvenes que se habían criado con él, le contestaron: —Así dirás al pueblo que te ha hablado diciendo: “Tu padre agravó nuestro yugo, pero tú disminuye nuestra carga.” Así le dirás: “Mi dedo más pequeño es más grueso que la cintura de mi padre.

Then the young men that were brought up with him spoke unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou answer the people that spoke unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make it somewhat lighter for us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger is thicker than my father’s loins.

11 A sí que, si mi padre os cargó de yugo pesado, yo añadiré a vuestro yugo; mi padre os castigó con azotes, pero yo os castigaré con escorpiones.”

For whereas my father put a heavy yoke upon you, I will add to your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

12 V olvió, pues, Jeroboam con todo el pueblo ante Roboam al tercer día, según el rey les había mandado diciendo: “Volved a mí de aquí a tres días.”

¶ So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, as the king had commanded, saying, Come again to me on the third day.

13 Y el rey les respondió ásperamente, abandonando el rey Roboam el consejo de los ancianos,

And the king answered them roughly, for King Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the old men

14 y hablándoles conforme al consejo de los jóvenes, diciendo: —Mi padre hizo pesado vuestro yugo, pero yo añadiré a vuestro yugo; mi padre os castigó con azotes, pero yo os castigaré con escorpiones.

and answered them after the advice of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to it; my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

15 N o escuchó el rey al pueblo; porque la causa era de Dios, para que se cumpliera la palabra que Jehová había anunciado por medio de Ahías, el silonita, a Jeroboam hijo de Nabat.

So the king did not hearken unto the people, for the cause was of God, that the LORD might perform his word, which he spoke by the hand of Ahijah, the Shilonite, unto Jeroboam, the son of Nebat.

16 A l ver todo Israel que el rey no les había oído, respondió el pueblo al rey diciendo: «¿Qué parte tenemos nosotros con David? No tenemos herencia en el hijo de Isaí. ¡Israel, cada uno a sus tiendas! ¡David, mira ahora por tu casa!» Así se fue todo Israel a sus tiendas.

And when all Israel saw that the king would not hearken unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David or inheritance in the son of Jesse? Every man to your tents, O Israel! Now, David, see to thine own house! So all Israel went to their tents.

17 P ero reinó Roboam sobre los hijos de Israel que habitaban en las ciudades de Judá.

But Rehoboam reigned over the sons of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah.

18 E nvió luego el rey Roboam a Adoram, que estaba a cargo de los tributos, pero lo apedrearon los hijos de Israel, y murió. Entonces se apresuró el rey Roboam a subir en su carro para huir a Jerusalén.

Then King Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was over the tribute and the sons of Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. So King Rehoboam made speed to get into a chariot and fled to Jerusalem.

19 A sí se apartó Israel de la casa de David hasta el día de hoy.

Thus Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.
