1 N ow these are the generations of the sons of Noah, namely, of Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and unto them were sons born after the flood.

These are the families of Shem, Ham and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and of their families. Sons were born to them after the flood.

2 T he sons of Japheth: Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras.

The sons of Japheth were Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras.

3 A nd the sons of Gomer: Ashkenaz, and Riphath, and Togarmah.

The sons of Gomer were Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah.

4 A nd the sons of Javan: Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim.

The sons of Javan were Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim.

5 O f these were the isles of the nations divided in their lands, every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations.

From these the people who live beside the sea spread out into their lands, each one by his language, family, and nation.

6 A nd the sons of Ham: Cush, and Mizraim, and Put, and Canaan.

The sons of Ham were Cush, Mizraim, Put, and Canaan.

7 A nd the sons of Cush: Seba, and Havilah, and Sabtah, and Raamah, and Sabteca; and the sons of Raamah: Sheba, and Dedan.

The sons of Cush were Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabteca. The sons of Raamah were Sheba and Dedan.

8 A nd Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth.

Cush became the father of Nimrod, who was the first on earth to become a powerful man.

9 H e was a mighty hunter before Jehovah: wherefore it is said, Like Nimrod a mighty hunter before Jehovah.

He was a powerful animal-killer in the eyes of the Lord. So it is said, “Like Nimrod, a powerful animal-killer in the eyes of the Lord.”

10 A nd the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.

The beginning of his nation was Babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.

11 O ut of that land he went forth into Assyria, and builded Nineveh, and Rehoboth-ir, and Calah,

He went into Assyria from the land, and built Nineveh, Rehoboth-Ir, Calah

12 a nd Resen between Nineveh and Calah (the same is the great city).

and Resen between Nineveh and Calah. That is the great city.

13 A nd Mizraim begat Ludim, and Anamim, and Lehabim, and Naphtuhim,

Mizraim became the father of Ludim, Anamim, Lehabim, Naphtuhim,

14 a nd Pathrusim, and Casluhim (whence went forth the Philistines), and Caphtorim.

Pathrusim, Casluhim (from which came the Philistines), and Caphtorim.

15 A nd Canaan begat Sidon his first-born, and Heth,

Canaan became the father of Sidon, his first-born, and Heth,

16 a nd the Jebusite, and the Amorite, and the Girgashite,

and the Jebusite, the Amorite, the Girgashite,

17 a nd the Hivite, and the Arkite, and the Sinite,

the Hivite, the Arkite, the Sinite,

18 a nd the Arvadite, and the Zemarite, and the Hamathite: and afterward were the families of the Canaanite spread abroad.

19 A nd the border of the Canaanite was from Sidon, as thou goest toward Gerar, unto Gaza; as thou goest toward Sodom and Gomorrah and Admah and Zeboiim, unto Lasha.

So the land of the Canaanite was from Sidon toward Gerar as far as Gaza, then toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim as far as Lasha.

20 T hese are the sons of Ham, after their families, after their tongues, in their lands, in their nations.

These are the sons of Ham, by their families, languages, lands and nations.

21 A nd unto Shem, the father of all the children of Eber, the elder brother of Japheth, to him also were children born.

Children were born to Shem, the father of all the children of Eber, and the older brother of Japheth.

22 T he sons of Shem: Elam, and Asshur, and Arpachshad, and Lud, and Aram.

The sons of Shem were Elam, Asshur, Arpachshad, Lud, and Aram.

23 A nd the sons of Aram: Uz, and Hul, and Gether, and Mash.

The sons of Aram were Uz, Hul, Gether, and Mash.

24 A nd Arpachshad begat Shelah; and Shelah begat Eber.

Arpachshad became the father of Shelah. Shelah became the father of Eber.

25 A nd unto Eber were born two sons: The name of the one was Peleg. For in his days was the earth divided. And his brother's name was Joktan.

Eber had two sons. The name of one was Peleg, for the earth was divided in his day. The name of his brother was Joktan.

26 A nd Joktan begat Almodad, and Sheleph, and Hazarmaveth, and Jerah,

Joktan became the father of Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah,

27 a nd Hadoram, and Uzal, and Diklah,

Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah,

28 a nd Obal, and Abimael, and Sheba,

Obal, Abimael, Sheba,

29 a nd Ophir, and Havilah, and Jobab: all these were the sons of Joktan.

Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab. All these were the sons of Joktan.

30 A nd their dwelling was from Mesha, as thou goest toward Sephar, the mountain of the east.

The land where they lived was from Mesha toward Sephar to the hill country of the east.

31 T hese are the sons of Shem, after their families, after their tongues, in their lands, after their nations.

These are the sons of Shem, by their families, languages, lands and nations.

32 T hese are the families of the sons of Noah, after their generations, in their nations: and of these were the nations divided in the earth after the flood.

These are the families of the sons of Noah. From these family groups, nations were spread over the earth after the flood.
